so we got the keys to our new place on friday and the renovations began on saturday. it's been a complete learning process in many ways...but probably the most notable being linguistic. since our contractor only speaks cantonese, it's been quite the challenge for us to communicate with him—particularly since our construction and building materials terminology is quite limited. my mom is away on a 3-week trip to b.c. so we don't have the advantage of having her here to help us with it, but thank goodness for cell phones and nation-wide coverage! here are a few pics of our work in progress.
- ripping out the old ensuite. plumbing wasn't quite up to code.
- tearing down the poorly designed walk-in closet in our bedroom to allow for an more open space. although now that the new drywall is up...we have a interesting design predicament. more on that later.
- replacing the carpet on the 2nd floor with hardwood. older parquet was found once we ripped up the carpet, but it wasn't in very good condition. we're still trying to figure out how to do the stairs.
