unexpected excitement
so my day off yesterday did not go exactly as planned... my plan was to eat lunch with my mom, go to my biweekly appointment at the OB's office, then head home and work on some much neglected school work. i guess this is preparation for actual parenthood, since the baby ended up throwing a wrench into my plans. at the OB's office, much to my dismay, i found out that i had gained another 9 lbs in the past 2 weeks. i had even made the conscious effort to watch what i ate and abstain from junk/sweets/etc. AND drank more water in efforts to try and flush about the extra fluid in my body. apparently none of that mattered. i'm attributing the weight gain to the (what seems like) insane amount of fluid that my body is retaining since i can't see how i could've put that weight on through food. i'd have to have eaten super-sized mcd's combos every single day for every single meal in the last 2 weeks to put on that kind of crazy weight. anyway, in addition to that, they found protein in my urine and my blood pressure was up. i mentioned that i had noticed my feet, ankles, and calves being a lot more swollen (my feet now resemble paws and i definitely have what people refer to as "cankles") and my weight gain, so i guess that coupled with my blood pressure caused the doctor to have some concern so she sent me immediately to the hospital assessment room for some blood tests. from her office i made my way to NYGH and ended up spending the rest of my afternoon and early evening there. i was hooked up to a fetal monitor and had about 5 vials of blood drawn out and had to sit there until all the test results came back and then wait for the on-call doctor to speak to me. my blood pressure went down over the 4.5 hours that i was there and the blood tests were okay though a bit on the irregular side. there's a chance that i might have to stop working early (but that will be discussed at my check-up next week) since the on-call doctor recommended that i rest at least three times a day for at least 20 minutes each time. at this point, they don't want to do anything more aggressive since i'm only in my 34th week and the baby would still be on the small side. i think they want to wait and see how my blood pressure reading goes in the next week or so and then reevaluate what to do once i get to 36 weeks. anyway, there now seems to be a slight possibility that this baby will arrive before the end of 2008. i really don't want to get induced though. i've heard that the pain is much worse when you're induced...and kind of witnessed that yesterday while i was in the assessment room. a woman was in the back triage bed (who had been induced) and the entire time i was there, i could hear her constant whimpering and sobbing due to the pain. it definitely scared me. it was unrelentless crying and "omigod"ing. i know everyone handles pain differently, but still...definitely made me a bit uncomfortable. anyway, they didn't see any reason to keep me in the hospital (thank goodness), but for the next 24 hours, i've got to pee into a jug so they can test it some more. fun times. then when ken and i go to the hospital on saturday for our first prenatal class, i've got to go back to the assessment room and get all that same blood testing done again to check if it's improved or gotten worse. i'm trying not to let myself worry. please pray that this baby will stay in just a little while longer so he/she can get a bit bigger and healthier.

Well, Ken *did* say he wanted the baby born in December rather than January -- just so it would be the youngest in class rather than the oldest. But, thinking more, maybe he's being cheap and wants a lifetime taking advantage of the birthday / Christmas combo thing. Or maybe the closer it comes to your birthday, the fewer dates he has to remember. ;)
Good luck! Hope everything goes well on Saturday.
you know...i wouldn't put that past him. in fact, he says if they actually have to induce, he thinks we should go with my birthday. :oP that's your brother for ya!
