cuteness knows no language barrier
despite not being able to communicate in german with people here (besides ja, nein, ein, bitte, and danke), that has not stopped the locals from engaging naters in conversation. he will gladly offer up babbles to pretty much anyone and waves hello or reaches out a hand to all. ken thinks he would make a great future diplomat. his cuteness seems to draw people in and say random german things to us that we can only smile and nod at. who knows what they're saying?! we had dinner at an actual restaurant last night and i went to change nathan's diaper in the W.C. there was a bathroom attendant there who kindly cleaned off a side table for me so that i could change him there. svetlana even helped me with getting a plastic baggie for the dirty diaper. she asks if i speak german, to which i reply "nein. sprecken english." but she continued the conversation in german but added hand gestures. she ends up holding nathan as i wash my hands and doesn't want to return him! he didn't seem to mind at first. eventually he was returned and we went back to our table.
the previous night while at a café, an older couple at the next table were entertained by our naters. i think they liked his hair, which was even crazier than usual due to being under a toque for most of the day. the lady even came up to our table to touch his hair. then made sure to give his cheeks a squeeze before she left. i think the germans are much like the chinese (in HK) who have no regard of touching a stranger's baby. guess i can't blame her. naters DOES have really squeezable cheeks. :o)

Awww .. that's EXACTLY what I would do ... caress his hair and then squeeze his dimpled cheeks. I might even go an extra step of disinhibition by planting a wet kiss. I'll sanitize his cheeks afterwards for you guys. :)
Sounds like you guys are having a great time! Looking forward to reading more.

hahaha that's different though. you know him. you're not a stranger. would you go up to strangers' babies and do that?
