we arrived yesterday afternoon in hong kong after a long 14.5 hr flight. all things considered, nathan did pretty well for his first time on a plane. all the flight attendants said that he was quite good. usually babies cry on take-off and landing, but nathan was fine for take-off and asleep for landing. apparently you're supposed to wake them up for landing because of the change in pressure, but we could not rouse him and the pressure didn't seem to bother his ears.
we were able to get a bassinet for him, which he slept in for the last chunk of the flight. unfortunately, after we really got him settled for sleep in the bassinet, the seat belt sign went on due to turbulence so we had to take him out and hold him on our laps. i guess they don't want babies getting tossed out of it.once we were close to landing at hong kong airport, we were told that along with the standard immigration forms, everyone also had to fill out these special health forms because of the H1N1 flu. since i've been coughing a bit with my allergies, i had to check off that i had cough symptoms. as we disembarked and made our way to immigration, we first had to hand in the health forms. seeing that i had checked off a symptom, i was prompted handed a face mask and ushered to the medical post escorted by a member of the airport staff. china is being very vigilant about checking anyone with any kind of fever, cough, sore throat, etc. symptom. i guess with what they went through with the SARS epidemic, it doesn't hurt to be extra careful. at least they have learned their lesson! fortunately i didn't have a fever or anything so they declared that i was fit to leave. canada is on their list of infected countries now so i had to tell them that i hadn't been in contact with anyone with the virus. good thing i didn't get put into quarantine!
and congrats to tirza and adam whose baby boy arrived thursday night! another lil friend for nathan. can't wait to meet him when we get back home!
